Il y a environ deux semaines, LKONLINE et James Court  ont lançé une session Questions/Réponses sur Instagram afin de rassembler vos questions sur son livre : "Lenny Kravitz: The Life The Genius The Legend", sorti en avril dernier.

Did you know Lenny prior to writing this book? / Connaissais-tu Lenny avant d'écrire ce livre ?
I have never met Lenny: I did have a close encounter once however in December 1992 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham England. I was near the front of the concert and Lenny did one of his famous crowd runs during 'Let Love Rule' he stood in front of me at one point during the song. It never occurred to me at the time that one day I would be writing a book on him and his career!
----------

Do you know if Lenny has read your book? If so, do you know if he enjoyed it? / Sais-tu si Lenny a lu ton livre ? Et s'il l'a apprécié ?
I don't know if he has read it but I'm sure he is aware of it. The book is a tribute to him, all my books are designed to celebrate the artist and the achievements they have made, their contribution to music. I purposely stay clear of any private life within my books, concentrating on the music and the artists work. The only time I make an exception is if its relevant to a particular song or album. Other than that its just about the music and the artist.
----------

What inspired you to write the book?
Simple really: I'm a fan. I would struggle to write anything on a musician I didn't truly admire, if your not genuine on the page then I think the reader can feel it, equally if your passionate about the subject then you should feel that too. I first heard Lenny when I was in my bedroom in my early 20's. It was a Saturday afternoon and I had the radio on, the DJ introduced a new up and coming artist called Lenny Kravitz and said he would play two songs from his new album. He played 'Fields of Joy' and 'Always on the Run'. After the first 30 seconds of 'Fields of Joy' I stopped what I was doing and turned up the radio. It really stood out amongst the mundane chart songs that were normally played. He then played 'Always on the Run' and that was that. I drove that afternoon into town and bought the album along with 'Let Love Rule' which sat alongside it in the record store. I played 'Sitting on top of the World' about 5 times over. It was a great discovery and I played these two albums constantly, I then shortly afterward caught him live. I have followed him ever since.
I was a huge Prince fan and Lenny with these two albums was there with him. I wrote the Biography on Prince after he died in April 2016 and for me it was a natural progression to write Lenny afterwards.
----------
Il mit "Fields of Joy" et "Always on the run". J'ai mis "Sitting on top of the world" environ 5 fois de suite.

How long did it take to gather information to write the book?
I kind of write what I know first, my opinions on things and what is fact. I then research around it. I tend to find information as I go along as opposed to spending hours researching and making notes to bring it all together, everyone works differently. My books are in order and follow the Artists life so I would research Lennys early life and write as I go leading up to 'Let Love Rule'. I would then research that and move forward. If along the way I discovered something I missed I could then just go back and add it in to the time it happened. There is always stuff that is missed though and always not enough room to add everything in so inevitably some things are left out. Its always interesting when people tell me about a certain project or performance that I didn't add in but the truth is of I added every single session and wrote about every performance the book would be 6 inches thick. Lenny has been writing and performing since the late 1980's so its not always possible to cover everything. All in all though the book took me a round a year to complete.
----------

What is the part of the book you enjoyed the most to write?
Its simply getting the message across. When you truly admire an artist and you are enthusiastic about their work you always want to share and tell others how brilliant they are, whether that's playing songs to friends in a car, sharing albums, or putting things on social media. For me it was a great privilege to follow Lenny's Career in detail and share his incredible achievements. I personally enjoyed following his rise to the top in the early days and the challenges he faced as a Black Artist where record companies were trying to pigeonhole him into a certain demographic. Its great when I receive feedback from people who enjoyed the book and find things they didn't know previously.
-----------

What are the challenges you had to face to write the book?
When you write a book you are conscious of the size of the chapters and the overall size of the book. For example a publisher may say it cant be more than 70,000 words. This means you are conscious of how big the book is getting as you write it. My biggest challenge was what to include and what to leave out. There are certain things I mention that I would have loved to talk about for 5 or 6 pages but you can't dwell on things and it has to move forward or it isn't balanced.
----------

Are you considering to write a second book about Lenny on his next decades?
I would love too write more on Lenny, he is a fascinating artist and always moving forward. When you write a Biography about an artist that is no longer with us you always have an end point. However an artist like Lenny is still going, and going strong so the book is always on catch up. I was also pondering the idea of focusing on a specific area of his work or more on just album releases. I think that would be interesting as he has incredible longevity and variety in his music.
----------

Thanks to everyone who raised their questions! Maybe you are now curious to discover the book? It is still on sale on different channels including Amazon and Barnes & Nobles.

For having been in dialogue with James for many months now, the LKONLINE team truly wants to thank him for his passion, his kindness, his smooth collaboration, and of course his book which is so far the first book on Lenny Kravitz, written by a fan, for fans, and in collaboration with fans. In fact, James kindly offered to add some pictures taken by some Frenchboard members during different concerts on the tours in the last decade to illustrate his book. This is an unique experience for fans and we are endless grateful for that.
Hope to meet you on the road one of these days James!
