Cindy bientot de retour sur le devant de la scène : nouveau groupe (Spectrum Road) :

Spectrum Road is a groundbreaking collaboration between four giants of modern music: Jack Bruce, Vernon Reid, John Medeski and Cindy Blackman Santana. Born from a shared passion for the music of legendary drummer Tony Williams, the band will release their self-titled debut album on June 5 through Palmetto Records. Later that week, Spectrum Road celebrates its arrival with a highly anticipated performance at Bonnaroo on June 9, which also serves as the first show of a U.S. summer tour. Complete dates will be announced shortly.

“To be able to play and record in this band alongside three of the most creative and stellar musicians in the world is a longtime dream come true,” states Vernon Reid. “The idea for Spectrum Road first came about in 2001 and it was the ongoing belief in the kind of record we knew we could make together that made it come to fruition.”

Spectrum Road opens the ten-track effort with a blistering take on the jazz-rock barn burner "Vuelta Abajo." It's apparent from the get-go that more than just another supergroup, this is a deeply attuned band speaking a rarefied improvisational language. As the recording unfolds, there's a primal urgency to the performances that ranges from the meditative beauty of "Where" to the searing intensity of "Allah B Praised." Each of these four iconoclasts play to the peak of their musical powers, yet ultimately achieve a whole greater than the sum of their individual parts. Jack Bruce's bass work anchors Spectrum Road, while he also adds vocals to three songs, including the album's centerpiece, a spellbinding version of the classic "There Comes A Time." Vernon Reid delivers one of the most inspired performances of his career. Particularly worth noting is his patient and slow-burning guitar work on "Blues For Tillman" and a spitfire six-string barrage on "Vashkar." John Medeski shifts tonal colors throughout the ten tracks with flourishes of organ and mellotron. He brings a hefty dose of retro funk to the soaring album closer "Wild Life." As Spectrum Road's cornerstone, drummer Blackman dictates the flow, working in free time, juxtaposing delicate cymbal work against monstrous beats and fearlessly steering the quartet through a deluge of razor sharp turns.

"The band takes the electrifying music of Tony Williams as its starting point and turns it into something totally its own," says Reid. "There's a vibe from end to end, a certain type of force and ambience that I’ve never experienced before as an artist."

Spectrum Road is named for one of the incendiary tracks on the original Tony Williams Lifetime album, but as these four musicians demonstrate on their debut recording, this isn’t a tribute band. After making rock history with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker in Cream, legendary British bassist Jack Bruce joined the Lifetime for two records thus serving as Spectrum Road's direct connection to their muse. The group is artfully rounded out with famed guitarist Vernon Reid, of Living Colour, and multi-keyboardist John Medeski, one-third of the juggernaut Medeski, Martin & Wood. Made famous by her ten plus years backing Lenny Kravitz on drums, Cindy Blackman Santana has distinguished herself as an impressively versatile player who's as comfortable on post-bop sessions with Joe Henderson and Wallace Roney as she is touring with pop stars like Kravitz and husband Carlos Santana. The formidable lineup of Spectrum Road assures the legacy of Tony Williams lives on, and clearly qualifies as a major 2012 music event.

Jazz-rock drummer stays on beat with karate and raw food

It takes a lot of energy to perform at peak, says Spectrum Road's percussionist Cindy Blackman Santana

By Aamer Haleem, Special To The Sun June 25, 2012

She's a rock drummer per-haps best known for touring and recording with Lenny Kravitz. Cindy Blackman Santana grew up in a musical family and found her passion for drumming as a young girl growing up in Ohio.

Now married to rock guitarist Carlos Santana, Blackman Santana will perform with her jazz-fusion supergroup Spectrum Road at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival on Monday, June 25th at the Vogue Theatre.

Aamer Haleem: What attracted you to the drums as a girl growing up?

Cindy Blackman Santana: "I loved the drums from a very young age. I was probably three or four, maybe even a little bit younger. I started getting drums at the age of 7. I just loved the whole energy, physicality and the role drums play in music. Just the rhythm and the whole vibe and feel and the way you can control the dynamics and colour and mood. It's very exciting."

A.H.: You came from a musical household. How did you convince your family to let you graduate from playing the air drums to getting real drums as a kid?

C.B.S.: "It was very difficult because my parents said 'hey, drums are noisy and they are expensive,' so I begged for about a year before I started getting real drums. And once they saw I was really serious, they were very supportive. After a year of begging, I got my drums."

A.H.: Many people saw you for the first time when you per-formed with Lenny Kravitz. Tell me about your audition.

C.B.S.: "We have a mutual friend, and he had been telling me about Lenny for a long time. He said 'You know my friend Lenny calls me every now and then and the last time I spoke to him, he needed a drummer. Would you like to speak to him next time?' Five months later, I spoke to Lenny and he asked if I had drums set up in my apartment. So I told him I did, and I played for him over the phone. When I got to L.A., I ended up auditioning, and he chose me. He liked my playing. I did my first video with him, Are You Gonna Go My Way. We went outside after the video, and he said 'Cindy, would you like to join the band?' I said, 'okay, when do we start?' He said, 'we started 2 weeks ago.'

A.H.: Explain the importance of eating organic and practicing karate and how staying fit helps you meet your demands of your touring schedule and being a drummer.

C.B.S.: "The drums are completely athletic; you have to keep yourself in tip-top shape if you want to perform at your peak, which I do. So I'm very conscious about what I ingest. I eat organic food as much as possible. I try to get a lot of rest, I treat my body with respect. Because if I don't do that, if I don't take care of what I consider my soul's temple, when I want my body to perform, it's not going to be ready to do it and it won't do it. So it is really important. And I take a lot of care and a lot of time to treat myself respectfully. Some-times I go on raw diets and I fast every now and then - and I just take care."

A.H.: How did your super group for the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival come together and what's the connection with the late, great Tony Williams?

C.B.S.: "Tony is my hero, he's my favourite drummer. And I've loved him since I was young. I first saw him at a drum clinic when I was 15, so he's been my favourite drummer for ages. Vernon Reid called me up one day and said 'I'm thinking of doing a tribute and I couldn't think of another drummer but you.' He called me back a few months later and said 'Cindy, Jack Bruce is into it and wants to do it.' A few weeks later 'John Medeski is available and he wanted to do it.' And everybody was just so solidly into it."

A.H.: We're looking forward to seeing Spectrum Road in Vancouver. What are you looking forward to?

C.B.S.: "First of all, I'm looking forward to playing. I love Vancouver, it's such a beautiful city. I've played there several times with Lenny Kravitz. And I always enjoyed it. The energy is really nice. The people have a good, warm feeling about them. I look forward to the band just being there and being able to play this music. Hopefully we will have some time and walk around town because I really enjoy that aspect as well."

A.H.: Can you share the story of how Carlos Santana pro-posed to you?

C.B.S.: "Well, we were in Chicago and once in awhile I sit in with his band and this happened to be a day that I was sit-ting in. I finished playing and sometimes he introduces me and he motions me to come up to the mike. And he started talking and it went on longer than usual and he started get-ting personal. He looked at me and said 'Cindy, will you marry me?' "I was pretty floored. But I said yes because we were very much in love and in spirit together.

"He's got a beautiful heart, I love that he's such a great humanitarian and I love his focus which is trying to make the planet and the people and himself better."
